Associate Professor Dr. Lucija Mulej, M.A. in Anthropology, B.A. in Sociology
Professional Profile
Associate Professor Dr. Lucija Mulej is a sociologist and anthropologist whose work in Slovenia has helped establish the fields of business anthropology and personality management. Her professional approach moves beyond conventional human-resources models by placing the individual, their inner capacities and their wider organisational context at the centre of development.
She developed a methodology for studying character and the 4Q Methodology, which integrates rational intelligence (IQ), emotional intelligence (EQ), spiritual or values-based intelligence (SQ), and physical intelligence (PQ). Her work adopts a holistic perspective that connects spiritual and material reality, the visible and the invisible, and the enduring and the transient.
Dr. Mulej introduced personality management in Slovenia as an independent professional category. It draws on coaching, psychoanalytic perspectives, sociology, anthropology and philosophy, translating interdisciplinary insight into operational models for leadership, decision-making and the long-term internal sustainability of individuals and organisations.
Academic Development
Born on 15 August 1977, Dr. Mulej completed her doctorate in 2006, became an Assistant Professor in 2009 and was elected Associate Professor in 2014. Her academic path was shaped early by an interdisciplinary interest in the relationship between science, society, culture and human inner experience. During her studies in sociology and anthropology, she focused on relativism, interpretation, symbolic worlds and the role of knowledge in contemporary society. These themes became the foundation of both her research and her applied work.
Her initial professional appointments were at Slovenian universities, particularly the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Ljubljana, alongside collaboration with the Faculty of Management at the University of Primorska in Koper. In 2006, she spent an extended period in Denmark at the Institute for Political and Anthropological Studies, working under the mentorship of Phil. Dr. Tom Bryder. There, she explored methodological questions of interpretation, political psychology and anthropological analysis. During this period, she also undertook field research in Brazil and Australia, further strengthening her understanding of cultural differences, symbolic systems and the influence of context on individual and group behaviour.
At the Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (ZRC SAZU), she took part in numerous international conferences and gained substantial experience in research and international academic environments, including at the University of Nova Gorica, Faculty of Environmental Sciences. A significant part of her professional formation was also her philanthropic and socially engaged work with the Movement for Justice and Development, led by Dr. Janez Drnovšek, where she served as General Secretary and a close associate of the President. This period profoundly informed her understanding of ethics, responsibility and public engagement.
She expanded her international academic work at Swiss UMEF University in Geneva, where she completed postdoctoral study in Global Politics and International Relations from 2022 to 2023. Within this context, she further developed her research interest in power, ethics, social systems and contemporary global challenges, strengthening her scholarly position in an international setting.
Professional and Entrepreneurial Career
In 2008, Dr. Mulej embarked on an independent business path and founded MOLGA – a service for unlocking developmental potential. This marked the start of a systematic transfer of academic knowledge into business and organisational practice. For more than two decades, she has worked continuously with companies, organisations and leadership teams in Slovenia and internationally. Her sustained engagement with real-world decision-making systems distinguishes her as an academic who continually tests and develops theoretical insight through applied practice.
From 2009 to 2011, she lectured at the International School for Social and Business Studies, where her teaching achieved notable student-satisfaction results. She also lectured regularly at DOBA Faculty, where she developed and taught innovative subjects including Models and Tools for Effective Communication in Business, Positive Psychology for Contemporary Business, Quality of Life and Business Research Methodology. In 2011, she received recognition as the best lecturer in the master's programme.
She established BUDNJANI d.o.o., under the slogan "Opazimo. Budni." ("We Notice. Awake."), as the central platform for developing and implementing her original personality-management concept and the 4Q Methodology. Since 2008, she has worked intensively with corporations and companies as a lecturer and consultant in negotiation, motivation, the art of influence and persuasion, decision-making and the inner stability of leaders. She also leads individual development processes for directors, owners and executive teams. Her selected corporate engagements include Panduit in Doha and Dubai, DS Smith Slovenia and GEN-I.
Since 2014, she has been affiliated with GEA College in the Entrepreneurship programme, where she serves as an Associate Professor.
4Q Methodology and Personality Management
In her current work, Dr. Mulej is one of the leading figures advancing business anthropology and personality management in Slovenia. As a sociologist and anthropologist, she moves beyond conventional "human resources" models and advances holistic personality management as a new professional and conceptual paradigm for contemporary leadership.
Her original 4Q Methodology integrates rational (IQ), emotional (EQ), spiritual/values-based (SQ) and physical intelligence (PQ) into a unified framework for integrative judgement, decision-making and the inner sustainability of individuals and organisations. The methodology draws on anthropology, sociology and psychoanalytic perspectives, and is informed by long-term work in real business systems, which gives it distinct practical value.
Research, Publications and Public Writing
As a researcher, Dr. Mulej has 380 bibliographic entries registered in SICRIS, including two scholarly monographs: Relativism in the Sociology of Science (2008) and Methodology for Integrating Intelligences 4Q (2023). She is also the author of 4Q UP, a book on organisational systems and the people who co-create them. As an author and researcher of unconscious and symbolic worlds, she has also written the popular works The Secret – Why It Does Not Work for You, Beyond Revelation, Heroes: Conversations with Eros and Fever of the Soul's Tremors. In these works, she explores inner human worlds, spiritual heritage and the conditions required for the development of a healthy personality and, consequently, a more mature society.
As a publicist and speaker, she has published numerous interviews and columns and has appeared in podcasts, radio and video interviews. Her public work addresses organisational life, leadership, ethics, human development, social change and longevity. She writes for SIOL, OnaPlus, Sensa and Metropolitan, and contributes internationally to Modern Diplomacy.
